⭐Why Working Animals Are Different

Working animals require a different layer of records: legal classification (ADA service / FHA ESA / no special status), training hours, certifications with renewal dates, public access logs, handler rights, IRS deduction documentation, and lifecycle tracking through prospect → in-training → certified → retired. 📝Setting Up a Working Animal Profile

  1. Open the animal profile and tap the "Working Role" tile.
  2. Pick the species cluster (auto-detected from species).
  3. Pick the functional domain — e.g., for canines: 8 ADA service variants, ESA, therapy general/crisis, 5 SAR variants, 5 police K9 variants, 4 detection, MWD, 7 hunting groups, herding/LGD, mushing, protection sport, farm.
  4. Pick a sub-specialty if your role offers one (e.g., narcotics vs. explosives detection).
  5. Add handler info: name, contact, license/POST/NASAR/ADI credentials.
  6. Set the lifecycle state — typically "in_training" for a new prospect.
⚠️
ADA service-animal status is hard-blocked for non-eligible species. By federal law (28 CFR §36.104, §36.302(c)), only dogs and miniature horses qualify as ADA service animals. The app will show a red banner and prevent save if you try to mark a cat, parrot, or other ineligible species as ADA service.

  1. From a working animal profile, tap "Training Sessions".
  2. Tap + to add a session. Pick category, enter hours, rate success 1-5, add notes.
  3. View summary by category and by year/month.
  4. Export annual training hours as IRS-ready PDF for service animal medical expense deduction (IRS Pub 502).

🔄Lifecycle State Tracking

  1. Tap the lifecycle state badge on the working animal profile.
  2. Pick the new state (e.g., from "in_training" to "certifying").
  3. Add notes about why the state changed.
  4. View full state history at the bottom of the profile.
AniLedger tracks 16 lifecycle states as a JSONB array of state transitions, so you have full history of every state change with date and reason.

States like "lay_up" (temporary medical rest), "restricted_use" (limited duty), "washed_out" (failed certification), and "released_to_wild" (rehab birds) are all properly distinct — no more lumping every non-active animal as "retired".

💰Tax Classification per Role

Every working role is auto-tagged with the correct tax classification, which feeds into the Tax Export module:
  • Schedule F — Farm income (LGDs, herding dogs, working livestock)
