Specialty Growing
Dedicated tools for beekeeping, hydroponics, aquaponics, mushrooms, microgreens, bonsai, orchids, terrariums, native plants, and lawn care.
🐝Beekeeping
- Navigate to the Library tab and tap "Specialty" then "Beekeeping."
- Add your apiaries and hives. For each hive, track: queen status (mated, virgin, queenless), brood pattern rating, bee temperament, and equipment type (Langstroth, Top Bar, Warre).
- Log inspections with brood patterns, queen sightings, and disease observations.
- Track Varroa mite counts.Log sugar shake or alcohol wash counts. Verdix charts your mite levels over time and alerts you when counts exceed treatment thresholds (typically 3% infestation).
- Log honey harvests by hive to track production and apiary profitability.
- Multi-apiary management with unlimited hives
- Varroa mite count trending with treatment threshold alerts
- Honey production forecasting by hive
- Colony management: splits, swarm prevention, winter prep
- Pollination service contract tracking
💡
Consistent inspection logging is key to healthy colonies. Inspect every 7-10 days during the active season and always note queen status, brood pattern, and signs of disease.

💧Hydroponics
- In Specialty, tap "Hydroponics" and add your system.System types: Deep Water Culture (DWC), Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), Ebb & Flow, Drip, Aeroponics, or Kratky.
- Log nutrient solution readings: pH and EC (electrical conductivity).Ideal ranges vary by crop. Leafy greens prefer EC 1.2-1.8; fruiting crops like tomatoes prefer EC 2.0-3.5.
- Set up reservoir change schedules and get reminders.
- Track plant growth metrics for each site in your system.
💡
Check pH and EC daily in hydroponics — small fluctuations can have big impacts. Most hydroponic crops thrive at pH 5.5-6.5.

🐟Aquaponics
- In Specialty, tap "Aquaponics" and configure your system.Link fish tanks to grow beds. Verdix monitors the nitrogen cycle: ammonia from fish → nitrites → nitrates for plants.
- Log fish health and feeding records.
- Track water quality parameters: ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen.
- Set alerts for dangerous parameter levels.Ammonia spikes above 1.0 ppm can kill fish. Verdix sends immediate alerts when critical thresholds are exceeded.
💡
The nitrogen cycle takes 4-6 weeks to establish in a new system. Be patient and test water daily during the cycling period.

🍄Mushroom Cultivation
- In Specialty, tap "Mushrooms."
- Add a new cultivation batch.Enter: species (oyster, shiitake, lion's mane, reishi, etc.), substrate type, inoculation date, and growing method (bag, log, tray, monotub).
- Track the cultivation timeline: inoculation → colonization → fruiting → harvest.
- Log environmental conditions: temperature, humidity, fresh air exchange, and light. Each mushroom species has specific environmental needs. Verdix pre-loads ideal conditions and alerts you when readings are outside the recommended range.
- Record contamination events for tracking success rates over time.
💡
Cleanliness is everything in mushroom cultivation. Log contamination events with suspected causes so you can identify and eliminate recurring sources.

🌱Microgreens & Sprouts
- In Specialty, tap "Microgreens."
- Add tray batches with variety, soak time, growing medium, and seeding density.
- Track rapid growth cycles (5-14 days) with daily progress photos.
- Set up order forecasting if selling commercially.Verdix calculates how many trays to start based on your average orders and days-to-harvest for each variety.
💡
Sunflower and pea shoots are the easiest microgreens for beginners. They germinate quickly and have high yields with minimal equipment.

🎋Bonsai, Orchids & Terrariums
- Add specialty plants through the normal Add Plant flow — Verdix detects the category.
- Bonsai profiles include: species, style (formal upright, cascade, etc.), wiring schedule, repotting calendar, and seasonal care adjustments.
- Orchid profiles track: bloom cycles, dormancy periods, spike appearances, and repotting schedules.Verdix knows that phalaenopsis orchids bloom on old spikes, while cattleyas need a new growth to bloom.
- Terrarium profiles track: enclosed vs. open type, moisture levels, and fauna (if bioactive).
💡
Bonsai care varies dramatically by species and season. Verdix adjusts watering and fertilizing reminders based on whether your tree is deciduous (dormant in winter) or tropical (evergreen).
